The Defeat Of Democracy

The future casts a long shadow before it.
The time is coming—
when even our patriots will betray their countrymen.
Because fatigue makes cowards out of all of us,
and cynicism undoubtedly follows.

So who will save our democratic institutions?
Who will ride in, on a white horse
and restrain us from destroying our constitution?
Were you hoping for a miracle,
are you trusting there’s another smooth operator—
waiting in the wings?

Don’t be fooled again,
only counterfeit leaders govern counterfeit states.

What Is Dark MAGA? Trump Supporters Attempt Rebrand for 2024

“Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán cut right to the chase. He said that Hungary had been ‘completely healed’ of anything smacking of liberalism, and he was crystal clear about how to do it: Control the media […] Again, the mainstream news media has been reluctant to warn the American public in any consistent way about the escalating fascist threat to democracy, which is now global in nature. If ‘blowback’ is the term used in foreign policy and intelligence to describe ‘the unintended consequences of the U.S. government’s international activities that have been kept secret from the American people’, the growth and spread of right-wing terrorism in the Age of Trump is the exact opposite. These events are obvious, public and easily predicted, indeed almost inevitable. They are happening right now, in real time.
Because of a desperate desire for ‘normalcy’ and no small amount of self-delusion, America’s mainstream news media and much of the political class has deliberately downplayed the existential danger to American society and democracy represented by Donald Trump, the Republican-fascist movement and the larger white right. In fact, the public is to blame as well, for having chosen willful ignorance and denial, and defaulting to the helpless belief or hope that someone, somewhere—but definitely not them—will solve America’s problems.” Excerpt from After Buffalo, Trump threatens “civil war”: Mainstream media refuses to connect the dots

“Pundits like to take refuge in the saccharine refrain, “this is not who we are,” but historically, this is exactly who we are. Political violence is an endemic feature of American political history. It was foundational to the overthrow of Reconstruction in the 1870s and the maintenance of Jim Crow for decades after.” Excerpt from Where Will This Political Violence Lead? Look to the 1850s.

Commentary: “The banality of evil” is a concept coined by the philosopher Hannah Arendt, who wrote that Adolf Eichmann, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust, was an ordinary man who was motivated by “an extraordinary diligence in looking out for his personal advancement.” Intellectuals are struck by how many government officials and (capitalist) patriots—often driven by professional ambition or obedience—are willing to be the enablers of authoritarian policies.

“Our virtues and our failings are inseparable, like force and matter. When they’re separated, man is no more.” By: Nikola Tesla

“The exercise of freedom will always create rebels, because that’s the origin of revolutions. We can’t have a sedentary society, just like we can’t have a perfect union. If you don’t want conflict in your family, church and state, you want fascism, and if that’s what you want, you don’t want democracy.” By: A. Freeman

“In every encounter, we either give life or we drain it; there is no neutral exchange.” By: Brennan Manning

“The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. The object of power is power.” Excerpts from “1984: by: George Orwell

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority. There is no worse heresy than that the office sanctifies the holder of it.” By: John Dalberg-Acton

“Until men desire to control their own passions, evil has rooted itself in their hearts and darkness will rise again.” By: Jaime Buckley

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” By: Martin Luther King

“Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State.” By: Benito Mussolini

“Though liberty is established by law, we must be vigilant, for liberty to enslave us is always present under that same liberty. Our Constitution speaks of the ‘general welfare of the people’. Under that phrase all sorts of excesses can be employed by [authoritarian] tyrants—to make us bondsmen.” By: Marcus Tullius Cicero

“You already know enough. So do I. It is not knowledge we lack. What is missing is the courage to understand what we know and to draw conclusions.” By: Sven Lindqvist
